CAPEL HISTORY TRAIL
No. 5 - B W Stevens Stores

Like many of the shops and houses in the centre of the village, this row of terrace cottages and the shop to the left were built of brick in the early 19th century. The photograph above was taken in 1957. As you can see, the footpath had not yet been constructed but there were less cars to worry about then.
In 1899 Father Wilson rented the end cottage on the right and for a few years this was the first Hoppers' Hospital before, in 1910, he rented and then bought the former Rose and Crown pub, converting it to the building we now have in the village.
The front of the shop and cottages were later pebble dashed and painted. The off-licence, run by Mr Stevens in the 1960's, later became a greengrocers which closed in the late 1990's.
Today it is all one cottage with a porch added to the front and a picket fence in place of the railings. It is now renamed Wigmore Cottage and has acquired a pavement and lay-by at the front.
