No. 4 - Butcher's Shop / Ivy House

A Grade 2 listed building built in the early 17th century, the left side of the building was used as a butchers shop with a pair of small cottages known as Ivy Cottages to the right.

The proprietor Mr Jones married Henrietta Mercer from the village in 1882, and moved to the shop shortly after. The 1891 census shows that Mr Jones was a Master Butcher and ran the shop for a number of years. At the back of the shop was a slaughter house. The most noticeable thing in the top picture is that you can clearly see carcasses hanging outside the front of the shop.

The photograph below was taken 1n 1920 with an impressive motor car parked outside!

The building is now called Ivy House. The shop front has been replaced with windows and the wooden fence replaced with iron railings.
