CAPEL HISTORY TRAIL
No. 13 - Tully's Shop

Built in the early 1800's (the image above dates probably from 1905), William Tully's shop was a brick building and was next door to the white weatherboarded house where the owners lived. Tully's sold homemade bread and cakes along with various sundries such as sweets, groceries and newspapers. A Post Office was situated in the right-hand side of the shop. As you may have noticed from the images of the village green, a public telephone box was later sited outside.
As you can see in the photograph below, for many years Tully's offered a delivery round by means of a horse and cart, the horse living in the orchard behind the shop. In the 1970's the building was sold together with the land at the back of the shop.

The building was eventually demolished and replaced by 1 to 10 Forge Cottages facing the Green -which were built in 1996 - with the first properties in Forge Close behind, completed at around the same time.
