CAPEL HISTORY TRAIL
No. 11 - Looker's Grocer & Draper Shop

Mr Edward Felix Looker opened a shop here in 1891 shortly after he got married. Like some other shops around the village green it combined a grocer and draper's shop. The photograph above was taken around 1905. The Looker family also owned Oak Cottage next door to the shop.
The shop stayed in the Looker's family until the 1980's when Peter's the Hairdressers opened on the premises. The small square building to the right was used by many different trades over the years.

Miss Ethel Looker, who was the last family member to run the shop, was invited to open the village hall in 1977. She passed away in 1984 and is buried in St Thomas's graveyard.
The house is now called Oak Lodge and the small square building has been demolished to provide a drive way to garages behind.
