CAPEL HISTORY TRAIL - with prizes!

Thank you for joining us on a walk through the history of Capel.

All you need to do is scan the QR codes that you will find placed around Five Oak Green with your smartphone. Then touch on the link provided to be transported back in time some 100 years or more to see what the same view would have been then and to discover the history of the building in front of you.

There are 15 QR codes to scan and a map below shows you where they have been placed. Better still, this is a free to enter competition with a prize draw for the eagle-eyed that can spot the one building that has some incorrect information amongst the real facts in the description. Once you have found which one, remember the number of the site and then go to St Thomas a Becket church where you will find an entry form. Complete the form and put it in the box provided. Three lucky winners be drawn on Saturday July 4th at the Capel Fete.

PLEASE - remember to be careful when you are on the trail.

The traffic is a lot busier now then when the photographs were taken.

Stay on the pavements and be careful when crossing any road.

The front courtyard building was opened in September 1925 after Charles Saunders, who was killed in World War I, left money to the Mission. A Memorial building was added after the death of Father Wilson in 1927 to give extra accommodation and the hospital ward was rebuilt at that time.

With the gradual decline in the hop industry during the first half of the twentieth century, the building was last used as a hospital in 1953, converted to holiday accommodation and was severely damaged by fire in 1971 which tragically killed the elderly caretaker. Over the next ten years renovations were made and the building reopened under its new name of 'Hoppers' in 1981.

Now turn to your left and continue along....
