CAPEL HISTORY TRAIL

No. 2 - St Luke's Church

The picture above, taken from the village green, shows St Luke's church on the left .

The church opened in 1894, serving the village for nearly a hundred years. Low attendance led to its closure as a place of worship in 1985 despite several fund raising campaigns during the previous two decades to keep it open for its original purpose.

After a significant period of disuse and subsequent vandalism, the building was eventually sold to developers and converted to dwellings to become nos. 1, 2 and 3 St Luke's Cottages

The picture below shows that there have been a few changes to the outside with added sky lights and the central entrance porch has been removed from outside number 1 with a door added at number 2. The stained-glass windows have been retained at either end.

The picture below gives a view of the eastern aspect of the church before Falmouth Place was constructed.

The picture below probably taken in the 1970s shows the inside of the building as it was latterly arranged for services.

Now continue walking towards the recreation ground and you will find QR code no. 3 outside what's left of the King's Head pub.
